How would you describe a man who survived a near drowning and two hold ups?  Lucky?  Unlucky?

Alan Clark would say he was "afflicted with misery."

Alan describes himself for his first 35 years as being one who "always stood alone with no clear instruction, standing as an individual."

"I had no direction in life," Alan says.  "I was a victim of circumstances.  I wasn't a bad person, but I wasn't really sensing any purpose in life either."

As a teenager, Alan moved from Hastings to Auckland to find work. Even though he considered himself to be a loner not needing anyone in his life, he found friendship in a Christian teenage group. During their many adventure excursions, young people from the group would share with Alan how he could have a right relationship with the Lord.

"I walked away, not only from this group and the Gospel, but from the Lord God. My foolishness won that day, and thus my misery of being alone continued."

After three years of living in Auckland, Alan returned to Hastings.
