Police are urging drivers to be patient, alert and to keep speed down after a busy day of incidents on Hawke's Bay roads.
A 58-year old woman from Kereru received serious injuries and had to be cut from her vehicle after a head-on crash shortly after 3pm yesterday on State Highway 50 Maraekakaho.
The highway was closed for 1 1/2 hours while the Lowe Corporation rescue helicopter took the woman to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
She remained in the intensive care unit overnight with fractures to her legs, an arm and skull and was now in a stable condition.
The 31-year old female driver from Auckland was not injured but she and her nine-month-old baby were taken by ambulance for observations.
Senior Sergeant Greg Brown said the drivers were lucky to be alive given the crash occurred in a 100 km/h zone.
